As a teenager in the 70’s, I read the “radical” book, Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, published in 1962 which presented a view of nature compromised by synthetic pesticides, especially DDT. Once these pesticides entered the biosphere, Carson argued, they not only killed bugs but also made their way up the food chain to threaten bird and fish populations and could eventually sicken children…..this book made a huge impact on me since I always felt responsible to take care of our environment and God’s creatures.

DDT has been banned, but of the roughly 87,000 chemicals that have been put on the market since WWII, research continues to lag on the effects of many of these substances and their effects on the human body.
